Rebecca Q. Morgan '60 Endowed Chair Professor
|
Chu received his PhD in polymer science from Florida State University under the late Prof. Leo Mandelkern in Dept. of Chemistry. Chu is the recipient of the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities in May, 2009, and the Golden Eagle Award for outstanding alumni of Tamkang University, Taiwan, ROC in Nov. 2018. Chu was very recently inducted as the fellow of the National Academy of Inventors in April 2019, and into the College of Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering in the US National Academy of Science, Washington, DC, March 24, 2014. Chu is named as the Honorary Professor of the Hong Kong Baptist University, and Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Chu is also the guest professor of Chang-Chun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Science in Chang-Chun, Ji-Lin, China, and the National Jiao-Tong University, Xi’An campus, China. Chu was visiting Research professor at the Center of Devices and Radiological Health, FDA, Rockville, MD (Under Oak Ridge Associated Universities Faculty Research Program Award), visiting research fellow of the British Science and Engineering Research Council, Liverpool, England, visiting research specialist of the National Science Council of the Republic of China at the Institute of Medical Engineering, National Yang-Ming Medical College, Taiwan. Chu also served on the Biology/Medicine Panel of the Hong Kong Research Grant Council from 2010 - 2013, and the Hong Kong Research Grant Council Collaborative Research Fund Committee. Prof. Chu is the editorial board of The Open Biomaterial Journal, The Open Macromolecules Journal, The Open Material Science Journal, the J. of Bioengineering and Biomedical Sci., J. Fiber Bioengineering and Informatics, and The Scientific World Journal. Chu has published 218 referred research papers & book chapters, 3 books (Wound Closure Biomaterials and Devices by CRC Press, and 2 volumes book “Biodegradable Polymers: New Developments & Challenges” by Nova Science), a recipient of 84 US and international patents. The first generation of the biodegradable “Pseudo-Protein” biomaterials developed in the Chu’s lab was approved for commercial use as the coating for the Slender ® IDS drug-eluting stents in Europe in March 2016.
Chu has mentored 47 MS and PhD graduate students at Cornell U., and hosted 4 visiting PhD students, 73 undergraduate students, and 26 postdoctors and visiting scholars. Chu had developed and taught 9 different courses ranging from biomaterials & medical devices to color and textile dyeing and finishes.
Professor Chu has focused on the multidisciplinary study of new novel biodegradable polymers/fibers/fibrous membranes invented in his tribe for human body repair. His efforts in the last 10 years have largely focused on the design, synthesis and evaluation of a new novel family of biologic active biodegradable polymers that are commercially unavailable but would have very unique biological properties like muted inflammatory response, promoting cell growth, facilitating wound healing and would be nontoxic. This new family of biodegradable polymers has also been engineered into a wide range of physical forms/shapes ranging from melt-spun fibers, electrospun fibrous membranes, 3D microporous hydrogels, micro- and nanospheres; and they have been evaluated for surgical repair of Injured or diseased tissues, tissue regeneration like vascular grafts, drug-eluting stents, burn treatment, wound closure and drug control/release purposes, and 3D tissue printing. One of Dr. Chu's new inventions 'Biodegradable, Bioactive, & Programmable Hydrogels' was chosen as a semifinalist for Discover Columbus Foundation Award competition. Chu also teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses, and developed a new course "Biomaterials and Medical Devices for Human Body Repair" for biomedical engineering senior/graduate students.
